THE RED FLAGS PERFORMANCE – ENOCH’S IRISH PUB & CAFE
The venue shook and trembled as The Red Flags unleashed their musical fury on the City of Monroe last evening. Their unique blend of rock influences showcased their versatility and musical depth. The audience was awash in auditory pleasure with pulsating bass lines, scorching guitar solos, thunderous drumbeats, and charismatic singer Skyler Board leading the invasion. Marinated in memories from our rebellious youth, the crowd danced and sang along with songs like “Just a Girl,” by No Doubt and “Californication,” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their three sets were extensive and diverse, punctuated by shouts and cheers. By the time they played “Proud Mary,” by Ike & Tina Turner we were dancing on the deck of a steamboat just south of Memphis headed to New Orleans. At least that’s what it felt like. It was a memorable performance. Good times, in Downtown Monroe. The four-member ensemble had a big rich sound. Red Flags members are Jody Winn on guitar and vocals, Wes Rougeou on bass, Ethan Chandler on drums and Skyler Board on lead vocals. I first heard about them from Mike Downhour, Monroe Chamber of Commerce. I was at a planning meeting and Mike said, “Tom you have to see the Red Flags.” Mike reminded me again before I left. Mike was right, they are a musical force. The audience was mesmerized by their rendition of “You Ought to Know,” by Alanis Morissette. The venue literally trembled from the bass and drums as Sklyer’s rich soulful voice repeatedly evoked emotion from the audience. Yes, free speech was reaffirmed. The audience went crazy during “Kryptonite,” by Three Doors Down. Jody’s wisdom and experience were brought to bear throughout the evening. He respected the songs, giving each tune a little of himself, but didn’t go too far. The audience loved it when Jody engaged them popping up on tables and walking through the crowd playing his guitar. Bryan and Wes were rock solid, functioning as a team. This provided Jody and Sklyer plenty of space for artistic expression. Their set list was perfect for the occasion. I also enjoyed “If it Makes You Happy,” by Sherly Crow, ‘Dreams,” by Fleetwood Mac, “Bad Guy,” by Billie Eilish and the audience went wild over “Bobby McGee,” by Janis Joplin. This was an awesome show. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening with the Red Flags! I got a chance to visit with Skyler Board right before the show. She's a Nebraska girl brought to Louisiana by way of Hurricane Katrina. I mentioned the 1888 Schoolhouse Blizzard and instantly made a new friend. When I spoke to Wes, I thought it was interesting he had been in Seattle, Washington playing music before returning to Louisiana. He’s the second local musician I’ve met in the last few months with a pinch of Seattle influence. If you need live music book the Red Flags. They will make your party happen. Note: Thank you Enoch's Irish Pub & Cafe for supporting live music. It offers a platform for talented artists like the Red Flags to showcase their music in a unique and engaging setting. Tom M
